Always an Adventure in North Dakota
Some businesses do not have a huge need for an AdWords professionals. Some of these businesses without the need for agency help even use AdWords in low season. These businesses are the lucky ones. One such business is Rolling Plains Adventures in Sterling, North Dakota.
Owned by Jeremy Doan, the fifth generation living and working on Black Leg Ranch, the company is running on his family’s large property just east of Bismarck. The hunting and fishing company was created in 2000 – just as Doan was finishing his college degree and attempting to avoid the grind of corporate America.
As with any endeavor, the beginning was rough. Rolling Plains began growing slowly, but steadily. Jeremy’s initial idea was a laid back sporting destination, but things have changed. We’ve had guests from every state in the U.S.,” Jeremy says. “We also have a guest ranch where we host:
- Ranch vacations
- Corporate events
…And more with guests from all over the world.”
As the business has grown, so has Doan’s website and Internet presence. These days the world wide web is vital to the success of the growing adventure company. “Sport shows used to be a huge deal for us, but not anymore,” Jeremy says. “I would say 80 percent of our business today comes from the web.”
In low season or on the occasional day when Rolling Plains is not completely booked up – Jeremy uses Google AdWords to fill his open spots. He’s no AdWords professional, but he gets the job done. Doan also uses Google Analytics to see exactly what people are looking at on his site and how many individuals are visiting – “almost everybody reads the History page,” he says.
Rolling Plains uses YouTube to keep people on top of what is going on at the ranch, along with Blogger (Google’s blogging platform) to further update clients and potential customers about new offerings. “Those are all key factors in people feeling comfortable about booking with us,” Jeremy says.
These factors are especially important with all the growth Rolling Plains is planning for. With their continued growth, Doan plans to bring more jobs to the community and more money into the local economy. As of late, the company has begun plans to turn an old barn into an upscale wedding venue. A winery is also in the plans of Rolling Plains Adventures.
Due to the success and positive impact on the community, the ranch received the North Dakota Governor’s Travel and Tourism award in 2012. In 2014, Rolling Plains began to see national acclaim with cover appearances on four national magazines.
While exciting, Jeremy still finds the press, “kind of crazy, when we are
just some small-town North Dakota family.” Moreover, he knows the success of his ranch would not be possible without the Internet, as he states, “We would not be where we are today without the web. It is easy to advertise what we offer with videos, photos, and everything.”
With the Internet, Rolling Plains has customers from all walks of life. From regular people to billionaires – Rolling Plains understand where the success comes from, “If you do not have a website, you are letting your competition get ahead of you,” Jeremy says. “A little bit goes a long way on the web.”
