Newspapers and magazines have two big challenges in the technology and information revolution era. The first one is how to monetize. The second one is how to get readers attention and satisfy their needs and interests.

During the industrial revolution era, newspapers monetized by selling traditional advertising to brands. This cannot be done anymore since Google has monopolized the digital advertising business through Google display ads.

During the industrial revolution era, newspapers and magazines got readers attention by selling the printed newspaper or magazine to them. This cannot be done anymore since Internet has monopolized the reader’s attention, needs and interests.

How can newspapers and magazines monetize?

How can newspapers and magazines get readers attention and satisfy their needs and interests?

Newspapers and magazines can monetize by selling content and Google display ads to brands. They can also monetize by selling subscriptions, transactions and affiliated marketing to readers. Google offers for free, to newspapers and magazines, the subscription payment functionality in Google News App.

Newspapers and magazines can get readers attention and satisfy their needs and interests by using algorithms, robots, Google Publishing Center, Google News App and Google Analytics. The use of these technologies will give editors enough information to know what type of news, articles and stories their readers want to read. Journalists and writers now know what to write. Algorithms and robots can be purchased to third vendors. Google Publishing Center, Google News App and Google Analytics are offered by Google to editors for free.

Large newspapers like The New York Times (NYT) and Washington Post (WP) are using algorithms (software) with artificial intelligence (machine learning) to know the reader’s interests and to be able to satisfy their needs. These tasks are designed and executed by journalists, software engineers and data scientists that are currently working at these newspapers.

NYT and WP are using software programs (robots) to automatically read and analyze large amounts of texts and data in order to generate data reports and texts summaries to save times to journalists in their research tasks.

These large newspapers are using Google News and Google Publishing Center to increase their reach and engagement taking advantage of these two editorial products that Google offers for free to newspapers and magazines. NYT and WP enjoy the advanced technology that Google offers in these two editorial products, that includes artificial intelligence, data science, analytics, and subscription payment.

Journalists and writers at NYT and WP write great stories for their readers in a natural manner, written by humans for humans, but taking advantage of technology. The New York Times publish 250 new articles every day. These two large newspapers are wisely combining the human creativity of journalists and writers with the human creativity of software engineers and data scientists. Small and mid-sized newspapers and magazine should follow this pattern in the future, including a niche specialization content strategy.

  1. I was wondering if you ever thought of changing the
layout of your blog? Its very well written; I love what youve
got to say. But maybe you could a little more in the way of content so people could
connect with it better. Youve got an awful lot of text for only having 1 or two images.
Maybe you could space it out better?
